Second-generation Asus Eee PC Mini Laptop Coming in April 2008
I hope Jem can get his hands on one of these to give us a quality review. I think I would be interested in the 8 gig model, and there well could be a 16 gig model as I believe I saw a 16 gig SD card for sale. I would like to know if the OS is in ROM or if you can install your own flavor of Linux. Also can you download and install your favorite Linux apps? How much memory is left for the end users /homes?

Pretty cool, I definitely want a solid state drive in my next laptop. (I'll probably go for a Thinkpad though, their keyboards really kick ass.)

I might be able to get one when it comes out. I did request a hybrid hard drive from Seagate or WD to test, but they wouldn't send any out.

The other day when I learned about the Asus Eee PC, it ran on Linux, now a few days later, they are touting that it will run genuine Windows XP. This is very frustrating as it would have been a very positive for the computer world to have had Linux on these machines. My best guess now is that the Linux versions won't be available in the US once the Windows version comes out.

Hey, Oopla here. Long time no visit.
I bought one of the 4G surf's for Xmas. I have really enjoyed it. I got used to the small keyboard in about 1 day. And I think that if I a very large burly, clumsy man can do that, then probably anyone else can. The EEE had suddenly become my replacement laptop. It could do every desktop function I needed a laptop for. It has replaced the $1000 Toshiba I was planning to get in a year as my next laptop purchese.
It's very slick. Really, its like Apple polished, while still not limiting the user. I can pull up a command prompt with CTRL+ALT+T, disable the easy mode, even install my OS of choice on it. I really haven't felt compelled to, because it comes the closest to "just working" that I have ever seen.
In short, I have been very happy, until recently, when the thing died in a RAM upgrade. Its death seems 100% random, so I am not holding it against the EEE.
Here's to hoping Asus gives me no trouble on the RMA.
