Xandros Desktop Professional 4.1 review

There are several "business," "corporate," or "professional" desktop operating systems on the market today, all aimed at seeping into large corporations that already use GNU/Linux on servers. It's a pretty good plan, and most of the operating systems in this arena are pretty good -- not perfect, but pretty good. Xandros has had such a product for a while now, and it's always been near the top of the list in terms of features and quality. The market is now mature and the products are more competitive, though, and the product formerly known as Xandros Business Desktop, while still a good operating system, isn't keeping up with the industry's pace.

I enjoyed the review. I've never been a Xandros fan, but I am a fan of your reviews that get right to the point regarding the pros and cons. As a home user, I have never seen the need for Xandros. I agree that it is a very well done Linux on the whole, but on the other hand anyone who has used Linux for any period of time will become frustrated with it. Xandros has made it impossible to install programs like mplayer. To get full multimedia play it seems that you have to upgrade to their more expensive products. The problem I see for these commercial vendors of Linux is the fact that there are a lot of freely downloadable Linux distributions which are very good. I've always thought many of these companies ought to go into the hardware business and offer there OS's preinstalled on hardware they sell and support.
