Hacking SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
This thread discusses the Content article: Hacking SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SLED's target market IS the business professional. i.e. Those folks who are general office/desktop workers. They are not developers, web disgners or desktop publishers. The general business professional is the largest portion of the business desktop market.
Therefore the sentence that SLED "does not appropriately meet the needs of a large portion of business professionals", is completely wrong and is just the author's assumption.
However, the author is correct that SLED 10 ships with less packages than the community version SUSE Linux 10.1, but it's supposed to. This is because as is formerly stated, SLED targets the general BUSINESS user and not software developers, Web design, or desktop publishers.
If however, you are a web designer or developer then there is a companion SDK CD that contains the JDK, different compilers, design tools etc that can be downloaded from htttp://download.novell.com. It should address many of the questions mentioned in this article.

Re:Hacking SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
I don't know of any large businesses that don't employ software or Web developers. I think what you're trying to say is that SLED 10 is only meant for people who need a thin client, or some other low-capability computer system. That's not what the rest of the "enterprise desktop" market is limited to, though. IT managers and sysadmins who are thinking about buying SLED 10 need to know these things in advance, hence there are reviews. With that in mind, I think you have posted in the wrong thread; this is meant to discuss the Hacking article, not the review.
The SDK was not mentioned to me by Novell PR, nor listed for download in the same area of the site as the installation ISO were -- or at least there was no SDK there when I downloaded SLED 10. There were no messages during installation or post-install configuration that informed me of such a disc, either. So how am I to know about it? You telling me that I'm in error by not finding a hidden SDK is complete bullshit.

Jem,
I assumed you'd welcome feedback from someone "on the inside", however your childish use of profanity indicates otherwise.
I won't waste my time replying to your articles again.
Thanks

That's totally untrue. Immature use of profanity would be if I said that you were a big fat poopy head. My use of profanity was entirely mature.
You didn't identify yourself as a Novell employee, so how was I to know (not that it would have changed much)? Sometimes I value "inside" feedback, but it doesn't usually come to me that way. What I usually get are employees who are angry that I have published an honest review that exposes the shortcomings of products that they have worked hard to produce. I can understand why you'd be upset, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to come here and say that I'm "completely wrong" when you seem to have misunderstood the enitre point of the article.

Re:Hacking SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
I should clarify that two things are being addressed here: the review and the article. The article covers installing unsupported software and multimedia codecs in SLED 10. The other is the review of SLED 10. Further discussion in this thread should focus on the article, not the review. The review has its own forum link.
That the article says that SLED 10 may not fit the needs of a large portion of business desktop users is what is in dispute, even though it has little to do with the content and focus of the piece. Personally I don't see how anyone can argue with that statement, but I understand why some would have issue with it.

Never seen that one before. What happens when you try one package update at a time?

That means that there is a problem with one of the updates. It's likely this matter will be solved by time rather than tinkering. If it persists, though, you might try to update via YaST instead of ZENworks.

Re:Hacking SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
This is really great stuff - was annoyed about the DVD thing. Two issues while moving through the Video Playback portion:
1. Did a search for "mplayerplug-in" and came up with nothing. Searching for "mplayer" brought up the mplayer, but that's it.
In addition, for the libffmpeg0, there was also a libffmpeg0-devel which I didn't install. I assume that is right.
2. When installing the ZENworks updates, I only tried installing one at a time. However, when I went to install any of them, I got the error:
Dependency Resolution Failed
Resolvable id 148931 does not exist.
The above id number changes for each package I try to install.
Any ideas? I got so far, yet the ZENworks part is coughing on me. Please help. Thanks.
