Re:The truth about Mambo and Joomla

Thanks for this article. For one, I was very confused. I was initially of the understanding that Joomla was the new place to be, and as I'd only JUST started working in Mambo, I pushed straight across to Joomla.

Your article however, gave a better insight into what has happened, and that Mambo ain't dead.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

Re:The truth about Mambo and Joomla

I thought the same thing at first. After I did all of the research for the article, I realized that it was okay to stick with Mambo, which is a relief because migration is no fun. There are already code differences that cause problems.

Re:The truth about Mambo and Joomla

The only thing I would say is that since the split, The Joomla team has achieved a lot more work as did the Mambo team... 5 joomla releases correcting lots of bugs and adding some small features and at the same time setting up all the needed sites and envirronment.

On Mambo side, they only have released a holiday patch since the split.

Regarding my personal experience, I had 3 sites running mambo that I transfered to joomla without any problems and 4 new sites setup with Joomla since they started. All running well.
Also when I check the activity of the community on the joomla site they seem to be really more active...

Only my opinion...(excuse my bad english but it is not my native language.)

Re:The truth about Mambo and Joomla

Mambo also had a patch a few weeks ago to correct a security vulnerability with the register_globals setting. So in effect, the Mambo team has done two patch releases since the Joomla split.

I don't think releases are indicative of development efforts. The changelog for the 1.04 Joomla release was fairly skimpy. Still, it's up to the developers to decide when to release -- and how much testing goes into a project before it makes it to public release.

I don't think either project has a particular advantage at this point.

Re:The truth about Mambo and Joomla

First of all thanks for your article & efforts, its always good to read someones point of view & as far as I know, this is the most comrehensive "explanation" of the Mambo-Joomla split that I have seen.

Having said that its quite clear that you sway towards favouring the Mambo camp; and I dont have a problem with this. If your article only stimulates reaction & conversation about this sad affair, then you've done a good job! At least you made an effort to explain things, as you see it!

As a user I am totally confused! I love Mambo (or Joomla .. not sure which is the better for me!) .. and what I'd like to know is this ..

Is there a list of developers & their products for each product? If I buy a Mambo "goodie" from Company A will that same product be available on Joomla & (if yes) at what additional cost?

What developers have completely thrown the towel in ref Mambo & what developers are totally committed to Mambo?

Who's running the strongest camp?

I am now stuck & wonder if anyone else here feels the same?

Thanks

When you approach two sides in a dispute and ask them what happened, and one side says "sure, let me help you understand," and the other says, "you're trying to screw us! We won't talk to you," then the faulty party seems obvious. The silence and strange behavior of the Joomla developers whom I talked to makes them look guilty. That's their fault, not mine.

Which one is stronger? Well, Mambo has more users. I don't really know which one has more components available, but I will say this: the majority of components, add-ons, and modules that I have used for both Mambo and Joomla have been at best useless and at worst a disaster. You're better off sticking to the core modules and components. The forum bug you pointed out is a good example -- I can't figure out how to fix it. I haven't gotten around to filing a bug on it yet, and Google searches haven't turned up anything useful.

Having said that, I still feel that Mambo is the best CMS for online journalism. Wordpress is better for blogs, but none of the free CMSes can top Mambo for features, security, and support. If you prefer Joomla, that's fine too. I don't think Joomla will last -- I got the distinct impression that the development team was unstable.

Before this I really felt like you were trying to listen to both sides of the argument... I realize that this is your opinion, and let me be the first to say that I am new to Joomla, and never used Mambo (so I am not an expert).

It seems like a lot of the well used component developers are throwing in with Joomla. Joomlaboard (Starting the next release of Joomlaboard, Mambo and Simpleboard will not be supported anymore.), Joom!fish, Community Builder (check the hostname), docman (though the developer is part of the core team)

The opposite is also true Remository seems to be sticking with mambo.

I'm not saying that mambo is dead (by any means) but developers are not shying away from Joomla, and it seems here to stay.

There's an argument? There are sides? I don't really care. I put into the article what the people I spoke with told me; what I think is immaterial to the article. My personal opinions are always preceded by words like "I think," or "I believe," or "In my opinion."

Why does it matter which CMS has more modules and components? If that's all you're after, switch to PHPnuke. Again I'll say that third-party components suck. Yes, all of them, even the ones you have to pay for. But by all means, find out for yourself. What do I know? I've only been struggling with these issues for a year and a half. In my experience, third-party module/component problems do not ever truly go away -- sometimes they subside for a while and return after an uprade or patch, but usually they end up snowballing until you delete them out of frustration.

Don't take my word for it -- try it and see.
