External Hard Drive for Re-installing Programs

Thinking about gettig an external hard drive that would be used to re-install OS and programs. What I'd like to do is copy the OS and programs on to the drive and then be able to just copy it to an internal hard drive instead of going through a 2 day fresh install. My current C drive, which has my OS and programs installed on has about 6 GB of data. Is this possible on a fresh install, i.e., format the drive prior to copying it? Will it copy back all programs including OS and the updates for these programs? Will it copy bookmarks, address book, and program settings? What would be the best software for the original copy and then copying back? How big of a hard drive would I need? Given I have multiple machines, could I just make one backup and use it for all the macnines or would I have to make a backup for each machine? If need a separate backup for each machine, could I put the multiple backups on the same drive? I'm not sure but I think I'm talking about creating an imagine of the C drive. Any referrences to how to articles would also be appreciated. I guess what I want to be able to do is create the kind of disk that comes with computers like HP that you use to reinstall the programs that originally came with the machine. Thanks
