Unreal Tournament 2004 tips
I'm really sick of playing with people who don't know what they're doing in UT2004 in Onslaught mode. I thought it was common practice to master the offline version (or at least learn how to play) before going online, but I guess not...
1. If you're the first one to the Manta on a map that has few vehicles, DO NOT GET IN. Just stand on the wing and let the next person operate the vehicle. Up to three people can ride on a Manta in this way. Also, when driving the Hellbender beep the horn and wait five seconds for passengers, then go. It makes no sense to leave people behind at the base, but it makes less sense to wait around for them forever.
2. If someone takes the vehicle you wanted, don't shoot at them. If a Hellbender, Goliath or Leviathan is leaving without a full crew and you can quickly catch up, shoot a light-duty weapon at them to let them know you're coming. If you're too far away, don't hold them up waiting for you. Don't waste ammo just because you're upset that you have to walk.
3. Don't camp out unless you're doing serious damage on a regular basis. Waiting around for superweapons and occasional snipes means that you are effectively out of the game while the other team takes nodes.
4. Try to tie up several opponents by attacking freshly spawned enemies at a locked or unlocked enemy power node with a Manta. If you can distract two or three enemies for a minute or two, your team has an advantage. Likewise, don't fall for this tactic at your own nodes.
5. If your power core is under attack and there are already people defending it, go to the first power node and attack. It's better to have more people attacking than defending. You will never have a comeback victory if all you do is defend the power core.
6. At the beginning if there are two teammates (or more) headed for the first power node, head for the second one and wait. If there are people already headed for the second node, either attack the enemy or head for another connected node. Don't bunch up on one node -- you will lose if I am on the other team.
7. Don't bother attacking a Manta with another Manta unless it's stationary and the driver doesn't see you. It's just a waste of time.
8. If you're in the tank and there are no enemies around, shoot their empty vehicles so that they can't use them when they respawn. This is especially effective with unmanned enemy tanks. If your team is attacking the enemy power core, destroy as many vehicles as you can to prevent them from attacking your power node.
9. If there's a sniper camped out somewhere killing people, destroy him immediately. Sometimes this can be in the form of a Hellbender with no driver. In that case you won't be able to lock onto them with the AVRiL, so you'll have to use other weapons.
10. To kill a tank, attack with a Manta and keep jumping over it when the turret spins toward you. If you're in a tank being attacked by a Manta, get out and shoot it with an AVRiL or the shock rifle, or switch to the machine gun.
11. You can switch positions in a vehicle by pressing the number keys. This is useful in a variety of ways, most commonly to drive the Hellbender to a good, high place and attack power nodes and enemies with the tail gun.
ASSAULT MODE
1. Know the map! Play in Instant Action mode first, find out where all of the superweapons, turrets, vehicles and secret spots are. You can't win if you're constantly lost. This is especially important for the Junkyard map.
2. Concentrate on the objectives. Unless you're getting massacred by a turret or a bunch of snipers, just dodge and run for the objective. Even if you only make a small gain, it counts for something. If you are getting massacred by turrets, take them out with rockets, the link gun, or whatever is available.
3. You can heal turrets and vehicles with the alt-fire of the link gun. Turrets don't always have a lot of hit points, so when you can you should heal your turret if possible. Link turrets can be power boosted by using the alt-fire on them when they're manned by a teammate.
4. If you're defending, don't snipe if there are already snipers. All snipers + no sweepers = quick defeat. Get down there and kill some attackers.
5. Use the shield to protect yourself when trying to achieve a "stand here" objective where you must stand on a special spot for a short time. These spots are always guarded, and the shield will usually give you more time.
6. Hold or distract attackers as close to their spawn point as possible, but beware the sentinel guns. The more you distract them, the more they forget their objective and the greater your chances of winning.
7. Always use a turret if you can -- they're useful for mowing down dozens of enemies and/or distracting them with the task of trying to kill you.
8. If you see three or more rockets headed for your turret, get out and run as soon as possible. Find another turret or become a sweeper. Never default to becoming a sniper -- they stop far fewer enemies than sweepers do.

Re: Unreal Tournament 2004 tips
Nice tips! Too many noobies try to learn on the fly. There's probably some noobie teams they could join, but they shouldn't mess with the old hands or they're just going to spoil the fun.

It's so hard for me to believe that people would go online without even knowing how to play the game. If I see teammates trying to heal the power core, I disconnect and join another server. Why bother? At that point, my team will lose no matter what I do. Once I even had some moron in a tank shooting at a Manta so that I couldn't get it. He thought it was funny; I was the highest scorer on my team, and I left. Let him lose. I jump servers until I find one where people don't call each other "gay" for losing and other kiddie crap like that. I just want to play the game with a competent team.
It's not like there isn't a manual, or tutorials, or in-game offline experience...

Re: Unreal Tournament 2004 tips
Does somebody know how to change seats in the Hellbender when one is not already in one of the two gunner seats. If this is possible post it because I'm not sure that only one person manning a hellbender can change seats.
Oh I got a new record for daredevil stunts... On Torlan in the scorpion buggy I ramped for 3.06 seconds. I think I might have to get a faster system JUST to play this game. It is awsome and from what I have experienced in the UT2004 demo the feel is completely different from UT2003.

I much preferred the weapon model of UT2003. The weapons have been changed in 2004... the flak cannon is weaker, for instance. I would prefer UT2003 with the vehicles and game modes from 2004.
I haven't figured out how to change seats. I swear some people can do this, but I don't have the retail edition so there's no comprehensive manual.

EDIT: You press the number keys to switch seats

Re: Unreal Tournament 2004 tips
Maybe players just remain in one of the two seats manning the turrets after the driver bails out on foot--I've done that several times. If you've actually seen just a single person change seats though maybe there is a way. I want to find out.

Re: Unreal Tournament 2004 tips
I read that if you hit "2" or "3" while alone in the Hellbnder you switch seats. Haven't tried it yet though..

Re: Unreal Tournament 2004 tips
I just tried it out and yes, one can switch between the three seats of the hellbender by pressing 1, 2, or 3. So one doesn't need to always wait for others to use the onboard arsenal!

Re: Unreal Tournament 2004 tips
Never use any kind of third-party program to alter UT2004. There are some people passing around programs that claim to be "optimizers" or "enhancers." All they do is steal your CD key and send it to the cracker who made the program. There are other programs which will unlock the locked characters or do other things to alter the game. If you're caught using one of these hacks -- and according to Epic many people have already been caught -- your CD key will become invalid and you'll be banned from playing online.
